Anything that lives in the water, which is generally fish but could be prawn, crabs, turtles etc.
In typical aquaculture, large volumes of waste water are produced and only the animal is harvested for its meat.
In aquaponics, the waste of the animal is fuel for the other parts of the system, feeding the plants. There is no waste water, only evaporation.
In aquaponics, we want to use the animal waste and it needs to be safe to put directly on crops. For this reason we will use only freshwater fish, prawn or crayfish as they are cold blooded, and thus don’t have the same types of parasites and bacteria that can infect humans.
